THE PROBLEMS WITH THE EU REFUGEE RE-SETTLEMENT PROGRAM:

It is based on a quota of 120,000.

The actual number to be settled in the first year is not 120,000 but 66,000.

It is in contradiction with basic human rights and the right to apply for asylum.

No humanitarianism: It turns the whole logic and process of seeking asylum onto its head.

It is not going to solve the problem and address the real needs of majority of refugees.

It is nowhere near enough what Europe can and should do

THE PROBLEMS WITH THE EU REFUGEE RE-SETTLEMENT PROGRAM

1. IT IS BASED ON A QUOTA OF 120,000

THE QUESTION REMAINS: What are we going to tell the 120,001st refugee child? “Sorry, computer says NO!”?

The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) published its 2015 Global Peace Index Report. According to this report “the cost of violence around the world reached a record $14.3 trillion (€12.7 trillion) in 2014, equivalent to the combined economies of Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.” This figure equates to 17 per cent of World’s GDP and 43 per cent of it is military expenditure.

The report continues on to state “Middle East and North Africa — where several countries suffered from an upsurge in violence related to sectarian strife and civil conflicts, as well as a rise in actions by Islamist extremist groups, now ranks as the most violent region in the world”

Tony Blair: From War to Racism

Seeing the news headlines on Tony Blair, the first thought that comes to mind is, “Blair to combat anti-Semitism and racism in Europe? It must be a joke!”

Unfortunately, it is true!

As the European Union (EU) is about the launch its long term plan for the ‘migrant crisis’, the leaked EU policy document shows the hypocrisies of our rulers and the repeated denial by the EU of its responsibilities in the root-cause of this crisis and the ongoing civilian deaths.

The Final plan is to be published on Wednesday May, 13.

Speaking at a commemoration in Cobh, Co Cork, to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Cunard liner by a German submarine U-20, President Higgins said: “The sinking was an immense human tragedy with the loss of almost 1,200 lives and that should never be forgotten”.

One detail about the council meeting is repeated in many of the news reports: “[EU] Ministers held a minute's silence before proceedings got under way”.

"Record number of migrants expected to drown in Mediterranean this year" says the headline of a Guardian article (*). It is the word "expected" that I have a problem with. Who is expecting and why?

...

Almost five in every 1,000 children born in the UK die before the age of five.

The mortality rate in Ireland for children under five is 4.6 deaths per 1000 births, almost double that in Iceland, which was the lowest recorded at 2.4 deaths per 1,000 births in 2014.

Malta has the worst record with 7 deaths per 1,000.

In Ireland there were 17,699 babies born in the first quarter of 2014. The total number of births in 2013 was 68,930. That is 317 dead children before reaching the age of 5.

The Oxfam report, published ahead of Davos 2015 World Economic Forum, a gathering that brings world’s billionaires and politicians together, could not be named any better. “Wealth: Having it all and wanting more”. The work Oxfam did and the data they have collected is an eye opener and the report contains not only summarized information but also detailed numerical data to back up the findings.

The French state wants all religious practises of Muslims to be in private out of the public’s view. According to the French framework of 'laicité' religious code of conduct must not infringe the public area, but a lot of things that supposed to be private to Muslims are rapidly becoming  part of political-racist public debates as well as filing magazine covers.

There is no doubt that the US presidents and British prime ministers are at the top of ‘world’s most powerful leaders’ list. Therefore, their actions have always had long lasting global consequences. These consequences are not just a matter for local domestic politics but for the entire world. The governments of Bush and Blair were no exceptions and the entire world had to live with the consequences of their decisions and actions.

Looking back at the world of last 10+ years, Bush and Blair should be declared as ‘international criminals’ and put on trial for the very serious problems we are facing today.

The US led airstrikes in Syria and Iraq seem to have little or no real impact on ISIS. Since the beginning of the airstrikes a number of civilians and some ISIS fighters are killed but the overall organizational structure and the fighting capacity of ISIS are intact. We are told by the US administration and the leaders of states who joined the coalition that “they will continue the airstrikes till ISIS is destroyed”.

Today is Blair Day on the news... He says "People should listen to my advice on Isis as I have been to war in Iraq before".  He is addicted to invading Iraq. Unless he gets a good dose of it every ten years or so, he can’t function properly. If he doesn’t get his dose, he starts sweating; his hands itch, his stomach rumbles and his eyes go crazy red… You see, like any addiction, his brain starts playing games…  He starts producing arguments to get what he wants.

In a few days’ time millions of living rooms around the world will be filled with the intoxicating sound of football stadiums. Like modern day gladiators, special elite forces of the nations will battle in grand arenas for the biggest sporting trophy in the world. Thankfully, these battles won’t be a fight for life or death. There won’t be wild animals, brutal fighting, blood and killing at the end but there will be something else that is wild about these games and actually has brutalised the lives of millions in Brazil and around the world. That beast is called neoliberal market economy, or simply ‘capitalism’. Like the gladiator battles of the ancient times, these modern day games will be a fight for more wealth, not for the millions in their living rooms and thousands filling the stadiums but for a few who are in the business of football.

Official guidance obtained by the Guardian shows that immigration staff have been set a target of winning 70% of tribunal cases in which asylum seekers are appealing against government decisions that they should leave the UK.”

Our world is an exciting, upsetting, joyful and a hopeful place. There are disasters, wars, oppressions and exploitations in a lot of places but there are also fight-backs, humanity, resistance and revolutionary struggle as well.

At times, it seems that all good things are lost and struggles are defeated. But nothing -fortunately- is just black and white. Defeat and victory seem to be co-existing in many places.

But a struggle goes on everywhere.

Muslims in Ireland are shocked by a letter posted to schools and mosques declaring war against them.

An anonymous letter has been received by Muslim schools and mosques in Dublin. The letter is full of hatred and threats beyond comprehension.

It seems our little island of Ireland isn't always a friendly place without the problem of racism and attacks on migrants. Just a short while after the horrific state racism against the two Roma families, a halal shop in Cookstown Tallaght has been attacked and vandalised by racists. The scenes from the shop are horrific. There are many racist writings on the walls, full of  hatred.

The horrible events of two Roma children being taken away from their families, undoubtedly, based on racial profiling, created a huge debate in Ireland. Thankfully, there were many organizations, commentators and citizens who were extremely disgusted with how the state (the Gardaí, HSE, courts and political leaders etc.) and some of the mainstream media handled these events. Although there were all sorts of racist and out of context focus on Roma people, it would be not an overstatement to say that majority of the people in Ireland expressed solidarity with the two families. (Am I being optimistic?)

The headline of the Irish Independent (21/10/2013) is screaming at us in big bold letters: “THE SOCIAL WELFARE CULTURE”

Whatever Enda Kenny will do about the social welfare in long term is to be seen, but it seems the first and most important task for the government is to get the society to recognise the 'problem' of our social welfare system.

Antioch, the ancient land within Turkey's border that stretches out into Syria, is a place I went to many times. I fell in love with the place, its people and its complex and multi-cultural history. When you reach the seashore of Seleucia Pieria you are in all places at the same time, divided by modern borders: Syria, Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. The struggles of Antioch of the past are shining a light to the struggles in the region today...
