It seems we are going to have another political party led by the former Fine Gael junior minister Lucinda Creighton who is calling for a ‘reboot’ of Ireland. Lucinda Creighton is joined by financial commentator and advisor Eddie Hobbs.

Happy New Year Ireland!

As the international mergers, acquisitions and takeovers happen; multinational corporations compare (purposefully so) apples and oranges and come-up with propaganda to win the political and public battle against workers and trade unions. The jargon they use sounds scientific. It seems as if the numbers and figures they are presenting are undeniable facts and as if these are objective and independently verified figures.

Trade union officials need to take note of these. Surely this is not the first time they had to deal with such things.

Make no mistake; Northern Ireland first minister Peter Robinson has no problem with Islam and Muslims. You all misunderstood him. He loves Muslims.

Make no mistake; Northern Ireland first minister Peter Robinson has no problem with Islam and Muslims. You all misunderstood him. He loves Muslims.

He admires the corporations in Muslim countries and their bosses. So much so, forget about a few pence, he would trust them with millions of Pounds. He wants to work with them…

He has no problem with some of the corrupt rulers of Muslim countries, or the fact that millions of Muslim working class people are living in poverty under oppressive regimes…

I must admit that I was wrong when I - being unusually pessimistic - thought that there will be only around 50 known faces at today's “Our Water Is Not for Sale” conference.

I must also admit that I was worried that this conference may turn into an inward looking debate without the outcome of a renewed commitment and activism by people to fight the water charges and all other cuts.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London: Children at risk of radicalisation should be in care.

“Muslim children who risk radicalisation by their parents should be taken into care”, Boris Johnson has said. “How do we make sure the kids in London are not growing up with these kind of nightmarish ideas in their heads?”

Well, Mr. Johnson, let me ask you another question. How do we make sure the kids in London are not growing up exposed to these kind of nightmarish racist, right-wing ideas?

“Home Office officials are being rewarded with shopping vouchers for helping to ensure failed asylum seekers lose their attempt to stay in the country, new documents reveal. Official guidance obtained by the Guardian shows that immigration staff have been set a target of winning 70% of tribunal cases in which asylum seekers are appealing against government decisions that they should leave the UK.”

A new political party has officially been launched in Ireland. The National Independent Party (NIP), defining itself as “similar to UKIP” of Britain, has been formally registered as a political party on 14 January. This date may well mark the beginning of an escalating racist debate on race, ethnicity, migrants, asylum seekers and the wider immigration issue; a scene we know so well from the political agenda and actions of UK’s UKIP.

As I started reading the report on thereferendum in the Irish Times, I noticed another item that said: “Fall in house prices accelerating”. Great! Thousands of mortgage holders, who bought a house just to put a roof over their family’s heads, are in further misery.  People who were stuck in a high and speculative investor-driven rental market, people who thought buying a home made sense, have been buried deeper in negative equity - the same people who suffered levies, cuts and job losses for the benefit of banks, builders and bond holders; the very same people whose mortgage debts (real money) to the banks stayed the same while all their income and the value of their homes kept dropping.  Not a few, but thousands of people are at the point of losing their family homes. They can’t sell them, they can’t pay for them but they are now asked to pay another €100 (to begin with) for their homes.
