On October 4, 2017, more than 17 years since the direct provision system (DPS) and the employment ban for asylum seekers were put in place, Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan announced that adults in DPS will soon have access to the labour market. In other words, they will have the ‘right to work’.

Charlie Hebdo had a very dramatic and ‘spectacular’ start to the New Year. First, it was a cover page with a strange looking God on it, carrying a Kalashnikov. The title was “One year on: the assassin is still out there”. Then it was the cover page picturing the drowned refugee boy Aylan Kurdi and ass groping refugees in Germany, with monkey like-faces, chasing European women. Under the title “migrants” the text read: “What would little Aylan have grown up to be? An ass groper in Germany”

Despite being under no illusion, it is very disappointing to read that Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras visiting Lesbos said "It is imperative that we reach an agreement with Turkey to stop the flows by targeting the smugglers".

NOT to help the refugees, not to come up with agreements to create humanitarian, safe procedures to enable people to use their human right of seeking refuge but  TO STOP THE FLOWS

THE PROBLEMS WITH THE EU REFUGEE RE-SETTLEMENT PROGRAM:

It is based on a quota of 120,000.

The actual number to be settled in the first year is not 120,000 but 66,000.

It is in contradiction with basic human rights and the right to apply for asylum.

No humanitarianism: It turns the whole logic and process of seeking asylum onto its head.

It is not going to solve the problem and address the real needs of majority of refugees.

It is nowhere near enough what Europe can and should do

THE PROBLEMS WITH THE EU REFUGEE RE-SETTLEMENT PROGRAM

1. IT IS BASED ON A QUOTA OF 120,000

THE QUESTION REMAINS: What are we going to tell the 120,001st refugee child? “Sorry, computer says NO!”?

There are two separate and irreconcilable Europes that can’t live together.

Their capital cities are not divided by rivers only…

There are two separate and irreconcilable Europes that can’t live together.

Their capital cities are not divided by rivers only…

One has a bloody history, full of lies; the other is the history of confronting these…

One has been making war, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people, the other is saying “No to war!”

One is old; the other is only young…

One shuts the borders to refugees, counting the number of deaths; the other shouts “Open the borders!”

Tony Blair: From War to Racism

Seeing the news headlines on Tony Blair, the first thought that comes to mind is, “Blair to combat anti-Semitism and racism in Europe? It must be a joke!”

Unfortunately, it is true!

As the European Union (EU) is about the launch its long term plan for the ‘migrant crisis’, the leaked EU policy document shows the hypocrisies of our rulers and the repeated denial by the EU of its responsibilities in the root-cause of this crisis and the ongoing civilian deaths.

The Final plan is to be published on Wednesday May, 13.

One detail about the council meeting is repeated in many of the news reports: “[EU] Ministers held a minute's silence before proceedings got under way”.

The French state wants all religious practises of Muslims to be in private out of the public’s view. According to the French framework of 'laicité' religious code of conduct must not infringe the public area, but a lot of things that supposed to be private to Muslims are rapidly becoming  part of political-racist public debates as well as filing magazine covers.

A few days ago, Ukip leader Nigel Farage was debating the 'immigration issue' as part of a panel on UTV in front of a live audience in the studio. At one point, when he was challenged by other guests on the panel on how the country benefited from immigration and migrants, he replied "the rich liberals in central London benefited from immigration by having cheaper chauffeurs and house maids, the corporations benefited from low-wage workers".

Today, December 7th was a good day in Ireland; a day of fight-back, solidarity and a well-taught lesson for the bosses on 'what happens when you attack workers' pensions and conditions'. M&S bosses received this lesson today.

Who knows, who will be the next?

Today was also a lesson for many of us, who thought that there is no fight-back in Ireland despite all the worsening conditions in the country.

Today, there is a sense of joy among the EU and Turkish politicians; a joy that is shared and reported enthusiastically by the mainstream Turkish and European media. The main headlines give the good news in big bold letters: "Visa free travel for Turkish citizens to EU countries!" But wait! There is a much smaller, almost invisible sub-heading underneath this joyfully breaking story: "Readmission Agreement to be signed between EU and Turkey on December 16". Horror hits you!

Switzerland: Double racism, double standards

Last week we read two seperate news items on racism from Switzerland...

The first one was about asylum seekers: “The town of Bremgarten in the Swiss canton of Aargau has banned asylum seekers from public swimming pools and sports facilities. The decision is symptomatic of Switzerland's increasingly restrictive asylum policy.... In a move described by the Swiss Refugee Council as "indefensible in both legal and humanitarian terms," the town of Bremgarten in the Swiss canton of Aargau has introduced several "exclusion zones" for asylum seekers, including public swimming pools, sports facilities, church and school grounds.”
