It seems we are going to have another political party led by the former Fine Gael junior minister Lucinda Creighton who is calling for a ‘reboot’ of Ireland. Lucinda Creighton is joined by financial commentator and advisor Eddie Hobbs.

A few days ago, Ukip leader Nigel Farage was debating the 'immigration issue' as part of a panel on UTV in front of a live audience in the studio. At one point, when he was challenged by other guests on the panel on how the country benefited from immigration and migrants, he replied "the rich liberals in central London benefited from immigration by having cheaper chauffeurs and house maids, the corporations benefited from low-wage workers".

In a few days’ time millions of living rooms around the world will be filled with the intoxicating sound of football stadiums. Like modern day gladiators, special elite forces of the nations will battle in grand arenas for the biggest sporting trophy in the world. Thankfully, these battles won’t be a fight for life or death. There won’t be wild animals, brutal fighting, blood and killing at the end but there will be something else that is wild about these games and actually has brutalised the lives of millions in Brazil and around the world. That beast is called neoliberal market economy, or simply ‘capitalism’. Like the gladiator battles of the ancient times, these modern day games will be a fight for more wealth, not for the millions in their living rooms and thousands filling the stadiums but for a few who are in the business of football.

As the international mergers, acquisitions and takeovers happen; multinational corporations compare (purposefully so) apples and oranges and come-up with propaganda to win the political and public battle against workers and trade unions. The jargon they use sounds scientific. It seems as if the numbers and figures they are presenting are undeniable facts and as if these are objective and independently verified figures.

Trade union officials need to take note of these. Surely this is not the first time they had to deal with such things.

People of Ireland have already been robbed of millions of Euro for the privatization of water and the establishment of the Irish Water company. Before Irish Water has delivered even a drop of clean-safe water, they have flooded us with scandals that continue to cost us millions. For health, education, public transport, even fixing the old and leaking water system there is no money - as we are told repeatedly - but there are millions available for some dodgy consultancy services to tell Irish Water how to rob our free-natural resource from us and how to charge us for this robbery.

Suddenly, there is a social media storm created by some angry customers and Marks & Spencer finds itself right in the middle of it. Various media in the UK and around the world report that “UK retailer faces boycott after report claiming Muslim employees can refuse to serve alcohol and pork.” Celebrity Atheist Richard Dawkins joined in the debate and attacked M&S over this issue.

Antioch, the ancient land within Turkey's border that stretches out into Syria, is a place I went to many times. I fell in love with the place, its people and its complex and multi-cultural history. When you reach the seashore of Seleucia Pieria you are in all places at the same time, divided by modern borders: Syria, Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. The struggles of Antioch of the past are shining a light to the struggles in the region today...

Today, on 5th of August, the biggest and most significant court case - ERGENEKON - in Turkey, against illegal (obviously) military coup gang and counter-insurgency network, handed down huge sentences after a lengthy and complicated trial process.

NOT ENOUGH BUT YES!

Over the last few years I have had my fair share of experience within the Irish workforce. No matter what job I had I always felt secure in the fact that I knew my employer had to treat me a certain way, for instance there was no fear of them working me for 24 hours without a break or deciding they wanted me to carry out my work while wearing a chicken suit. I felt safe in the knowledge that I lived in a country that protected workers rights so much so that we had them written down and ratified in the form of the Irish Constitution. However, since that oh so familiar word “recession” became part of our lives I have most definitely seen a different side to Irish employment.

Bank bailouts, savage attacks on health, education and welfare budgets, cuts to the public sector, wage cuts and extra taxes have devastated the lives of working class people in Ireland.

These austerity policies have also made the economic crisis much worse.

Ever since the onset of the international economic crisis in 2008 and the consequent collapse of the Celtic Tiger and the Irish banking system we have seen the abject failure of the Irish trade union movement to mobilise serious resistance to the attempts by successive governments to make working people and the underprivileged pay for the crisis of the system

The 'sexy' EU vs. the 'ugly' others, surrounding it...

“The European commission has been forced to withdraw a high-budget video promoting the EU amid accusations that it depicts other cultures in a racist manner. A row broke out after the enlargement directorate of the European commission, which is responsible for the expansion of the EU, released a video clip that was designed to appeal to young voters.”  - The Guardian (Full Article)

As I started reading the report on thereferendum in the Irish Times, I noticed another item that said: “Fall in house prices accelerating”. Great! Thousands of mortgage holders, who bought a house just to put a roof over their family’s heads, are in further misery.  People who were stuck in a high and speculative investor-driven rental market, people who thought buying a home made sense, have been buried deeper in negative equity - the same people who suffered levies, cuts and job losses for the benefit of banks, builders and bond holders; the very same people whose mortgage debts (real money) to the banks stayed the same while all their income and the value of their homes kept dropping.  Not a few, but thousands of people are at the point of losing their family homes. They can’t sell them, they can’t pay for them but they are now asked to pay another €100 (to begin with) for their homes.

Since the beginning of this current crisis we have watched crisis meetings, major EU/IMF/ECB summits, and many times, the people of Europe and the world have been told that there are now measures in place and decisions are made to fix the system.

Drama continued on, and 3 years later after yet another summit of the political/economic powers, Greek Mythology kicked in. The Olympian Gods, from Zeus to Hephaestus are upon Euro-Zone. Germany, France, EU, IMF, ECB are all baffled. One can almost hear them whispering WTF?

Have the Gods gone mad?
