"Record number of migrants expected to drown in Mediterranean this year" says the headline of a Guardian article (*). It is the word "expected" that I have a problem with. Who is expecting and why?

...

Almost five in every 1,000 children born in the UK die before the age of five.

The mortality rate in Ireland for children under five is 4.6 deaths per 1000 births, almost double that in Iceland, which was the lowest recorded at 2.4 deaths per 1,000 births in 2014.

Malta has the worst record with 7 deaths per 1,000.

In Ireland there were 17,699 babies born in the first quarter of 2014. The total number of births in 2013 was 68,930. That is 317 dead children before reaching the age of 5.

The French state wants all religious practises of Muslims to be in private out of the public’s view. According to the French framework of 'laicité' religious code of conduct must not infringe the public area, but a lot of things that supposed to be private to Muslims are rapidly becoming  part of political-racist public debates as well as filing magazine covers.

There is no doubt that the US presidents and British prime ministers are at the top of ‘world’s most powerful leaders’ list. Therefore, their actions have always had long lasting global consequences. These consequences are not just a matter for local domestic politics but for the entire world. The governments of Bush and Blair were no exceptions and the entire world had to live with the consequences of their decisions and actions.

Looking back at the world of last 10+ years, Bush and Blair should be declared as ‘international criminals’ and put on trial for the very serious problems we are facing today.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London: Children at risk of radicalisation should be in care.

“Muslim children who risk radicalisation by their parents should be taken into care”, Boris Johnson has said. “How do we make sure the kids in London are not growing up with these kind of nightmarish ideas in their heads?”

Well, Mr. Johnson, let me ask you another question. How do we make sure the kids in London are not growing up exposed to these kind of nightmarish racist, right-wing ideas?

Today, there is a sense of joy among the EU and Turkish politicians; a joy that is shared and reported enthusiastically by the mainstream Turkish and European media. The main headlines give the good news in big bold letters: "Visa free travel for Turkish citizens to EU countries!" But wait! There is a much smaller, almost invisible sub-heading underneath this joyfully breaking story: "Readmission Agreement to be signed between EU and Turkey on December 16". Horror hits you!

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the European Union for "six decades of work in advancing peace in Europe". The committee said that "the EU had helped to transform Europe 'from a continent of war to a continent of peace'. The award comes as the EU faces the biggest crisis of its history, with recession and social unrest rocking many of its member states. The last organisation to be given the prize outright was Medecins Sans Frontieres, which won it in 1999.(i)

With the recent killing of the US Ambassador to Libya during the protests against a film that is seen by the protesters as “anti-Muslim”, undoubtedly there will be questions raised about the freedom of speech. There will be debates on whether Islam is a tolerant religion or not. Experts will reignite the discussions on the doctrine of religion (Islam) and its suitability to democracy and modern life.

Let me state loud and clear: I condemn this killing.

I have read some articles about Breivik’s case in the prominent Turkish newspapers recently. They gave a simple reason for Breivik’s massacre that he experienced some ‘tragic’ childhood traumas. One of the headings of the newspapers was ‘He massacred because of a Turkish man.’ According to the report, Breivik testified that the father of one of his friends, a Turkish diplomat, destroyed his bicycle when he was 7.

If a system fails, the responsibility lies with the leaders. And the system of war in Afghanistan has long failed.

As we are reading from various sources, the horrific news from Afghanistan, it seems to be the common theme that this was an act of a ‘rogue’ soldier killing people out of madness.

However early it may be, to get a full picture of this brutal killing, there seems to be a lack of deeper analysis and review - by the news reports - of the war in Afghanistan, now in its 11th year.

In 2011, everyday thousands of people die by unnatural/ man-made causes.  While the people in Africa may seen to be the victims of a natural disaster, the fact is that Africa has been colonised by western powers and divided and shared among the "white men" who saw themselves as the masters of the African people and many problems we see today in Africa goes back to these days.
