Articles in "Anti-War"

The US led airstrikes in Syria and Iraq seem to have little or no real impact on ISIS. Since the beginning of the airstrikes a number of civilians and some ISIS fighters are killed but the overall organizational structure and the fighting capacity of ISIS are intact. We are told by the US administration and the leaders of states who joined the coalition that “they will continue the airstrikes till ISIS is destroyed”.

Today is Blair Day on the news... He says "People should listen to my advice on Isis as I have been to war in Iraq before".  He is addicted to invading Iraq. Unless he gets a good dose of it every ten years or so, he can’t function properly. If he doesn’t get his dose, he starts sweating; his hands itch, his stomach rumbles and his eyes go crazy red… You see, like any addiction, his brain starts playing games…  He starts producing arguments to get what he wants.

Make no mistake; Northern Ireland first minister Peter Robinson has no problem with Islam and Muslims. You all misunderstood him. He loves Muslims.

Antioch, the ancient land within Turkey's border that stretches out into Syria, is a place I went to many times. I fell in love with the place, its people and its complex and multi-cultural history. When you reach the seashore of Seleucia Pieria you are in all places at the same time, divided by modern borders: Syria, Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. The struggles of Antioch of the past are shining a light to the struggles in the region today...

Yet again, in front of our eyes, the Western powers are gearing up for another military intervention, this time in Syria. The possible date, the planned duration and the style of their attack is all laid out for us to see on TV stations. Digital graphics descriptions of possible attack scenarios are presented to us like a computer game.

Last week Turkey's parliament authorised military action in Syria in response to Syria's deadly shelling of a Turkish town. Since then there have been more incidents of artillery exchanges and it has been widely reported that Turkey deployed additional tanks and missile defence systems to the Syrian border as artillery units responded to fire from Assad’s armed forces for a sixth day.

With the recent killing of the US Ambassador to Libya during the protests against a film that is seen by the protesters as “anti-Muslim”, undoubtedly there will be questions raised about the freedom of speech. There will be debates on whether Islam is a tolerant religion or not. Experts will reignite the discussions on the doctrine of religion (Islam) and its suitability to democracy and modern life.

Let me state loud and clear: I condemn this killing.

Neyse ki yazar, düsünür John Molyneux'un kitabı yardıma yetişiyor anlamak için bu durumu – 'Will the revolution be televised – a Marxist analysis of the media'.

A few years ago, in Iran, a university student told me that "Each time the US and the West threatens Iran with military attacks, the regime tightens its grip on various social/political elements of life. They use the "being under attack" argument and call for national unity and support for the regime. There are various political elements challenging the government in Iran and the government uses every excuse to disable these, including the sentiment of unity of the nation under attack"

A few days after this conversation there were two news items in one of the Iranian TV channels. The first one was about Hilary Clinton’s statement on how US will "obliterate" Iran. The following item was a warning from the government. It issued a warning to the people about their relaxed dress code, and said that "non compliance" with the regimes dress code will not be tolerated". The news channel went on about the great state of Iran and the bad foreign influences on some people...

I think this little episode is very relevant to the current situation in Syria.

I have read some articles about Breivik’s case in the prominent Turkish newspapers recently. They gave a simple reason for Breivik’s massacre that he experienced some ‘tragic’ childhood traumas. One of the headings of the newspapers was ‘He massacred because of a Turkish man.’ According to the report, Breivik testified that the father of one of his friends, a Turkish diplomat, destroyed his bicycle when he was 7.

If a system fails, the responsibility lies with the leaders. And the system of war in Afghanistan has long failed.

As we are reading from various sources, the horrific news from Afghanistan, it seems to be the common theme that this was an act of a ‘rogue’ soldier killing people out of madness.

However early it may be, to get a full picture of this brutal killing, there seems to be a lack of deeper analysis and review - by the news reports - of the war in Afghanistan, now in its 11th year.

Değerli Milletvekili Şafak Pavey,

Size biraz uzunca bir mektup yazmak gerekliliğini duydum.

Hakkınızda çıkan, ABD’den Uluslararası Cesur Kadın Ödülü aldığınız haberlerini okudum. Anladığım kadarıyla size ödülü, ABD Başkanı Barack Obama’nın eşi Michelle Obama ile ABD Dışişleri Bakanı, eski First Lady Hillary Clinton’ın da katıldığı bir törende vermişler.

Kendi resmi sitenizde de bu ödülle ilgili şunları yazmışsınız: "Şafak Pavey’e Büyük Onur. ABD Dışişleri Bakanlığı’nın her yıl verdiği “Cesaret Simgesi Kadınlar” Ödülü’ne bu sene CHP İstanbul Milletvekili Şafak Pavey layık görüldü. Pavey’in ödülünü ABD Dışişleri Bakam Hillary Clinton verecek. ödül töreni 8 Mart 2012"

Hey gidi lise yılları, BAL günleri...Üniformalı koridorun başında belirir. Nöbetçi öğrenci: ‘’DİKKKKAAAAT!’’. Ayağa kalkılır. Üniformalı: ‘’MERHABA SINIIIIIF’’. Sınıf: ‘’SAĞOL’’. Üniformalı: ‘’OTURUN’’... Buna benzer bir şeydi lise yıllarının haftalık töreni. Sonrasında gelen 45 dakikalık olmadık sallamalar, geyikler, palavralar. Her lise öğrencisi asker doğmuyor işte.

After one of the deadliest day for the invading soldiers in Afghanistan where Taliban is reported to have shut down a Chinook helicopter, killing 30 US special forces and 8 Afghan army personnell, The United States government has said that "it will stay the course in Afghanistan".
