A response to the Irish Times article by William Reville, Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry at UCC

For this man, my ‘MIXED BREED’ little one is a problem: Neither from ‘HERE’, nor from ‘THERE’. What the hell, she eats full Irish and Feta cheese and olives at the breakfast. She celebrates Christmas as well as Ramadan. She is neither Christian nor Muslim. Oh, God, what a messed up situation that is. Our professor surely must be stressed looking at these armies of children born in this country.

Irish Times published an article by William Reville titled “Let’s talk about the link between immigration and low reproduction rates”

The article begins with “How did we lose the will to replace ourselves and, knowing the demographic consequences of losing that will, can we reclaim it?”

The emeritus professor of biochemistry at UCC must have gotten bored and decided to write about the ‘dangers of European culture being vanished due to influx of’ – let’s call it – ‘Arab, African and other alien cultures’.

The editor’s choice for this Irish Times peace is particularly interesting, birth control pills but let us not speculate on this, though a picture tells a million stories.

In his article, before presenting some facts and figures on birth rates, Mr emeritus professor sneaks in his supports for the argument that “immigrants drive down wages, dilute social welfare and take jobs that would otherwise be available to native nationals”

“BUT”, he says, “MORE IMPROTANTLY, OUR CULTURE, OUR WAY OF LIFE, OUR SOCIAL STRUCTURES, US, WE THE PEOPLE ARE AT RISK OF VANISHING, BEING TAKEN OVER BY “THEM” AND THEIR STRANGE CULTURES. THAT IS EVEN MORE DANGEROUS… “, before reducing the human species to wild animals...

Immigrants drive down wages, dilute social welfare and take jobs that would otherwise be available to native nationals?

Yeah mate, did you hear about the cuts to housing, jobs, education, social welfare and health?

Did you hear where the money went, at least €64 billion of it?

Did you hear that those of “YOUR CULTURE” are avoiding paying tax while – again – some others of “YOUR CULTURE” are happy not to chase €13 billion owed to the people of this country?

If you are that concerned about things “what would otherwise be available to native nationals” than start talking about why they are NOT available before spreading your nonsense of “LOOKING AFTER OUR OWN”.

This man talks about “OUR CULTURE” referring to a group people, native in a specific geographical region, Europe, the West, whatever, and says, “MIGRANTS WILL CAUSE TROUBLESOME UPHEAVAL”.

No mate, it is those who will upheaval that will cause trouble, not the migrants. A bit like rape is done by rapist, not by the victim.

This man is of course a racist. He views the world in a number of intellectually primitive, politically reactionary and historically incorrect ways.

One is that he thinks “WE” the people here have a single-static-culture that is confined to a specific space. As if this culture, or indeed our borders, the space we call our country have never evolved and changed.

Another one is that he sees culture as homogenous such that, WE the people HERE have homogenous culture. So, according to his view of society, Dennis O’Brien, a native of Ireland has the same culture, the same way of life and eats the same food as the thousands of homeless families. Or that hundreds of thousands of water protestors are just the same as the top 1 or 10% of this society. Or, that from one end of Ireland to the other we all live the same way…

Nonsense!

Another one of his confused (the least to say) views is that he sees the world in class structures, or as ‘poor’ and ‘better off’ but only so long this distinction is subject to geographical separation. According to him, there is obviously no poor and rich divide in THIS country. WE the people, whose common ‘CULTURE’ is at risk, he implies, and WE are collectively different to them ‘OTHERS’ who happened to be black African’s or Arabs etc, he suggests.

For this man of a highly respectful social status, his professor degree may bring him a good income but surely not an understanding of the history. For this man, since the beginning of history (and by deduction, he must think we are at the end of history) we have had always the SAME culture. That, there were no revolutions, no radical changes that transformed our societies.

For this man, we must not have had ever changing economic-social-class relations in society or how we interact with nature must have always be the same.

"I am feeling sad" by a 7 year old childFor this man, my ‘MIXED BREED’ little one is a problem: Neither from ‘HERE’, nor from ‘THERE’.

THIS IS A DANGER FOLKS… OUR CULTURE IS BEING DILUDED! QUICK, TAKE ACTION BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE. MAKE MORE PURE BREED BABIES; WHITE, BLOND, BLUE EYED BABIES, AND MAKE SURE THOSE OTHERS DON’T COME HERE, DON’T GIVE BIRTH. QUICK, TAKE ACTION!

A short note on humanitarianism aims make it all sweet for us. He writes, “a certain level of migration is inevitable because of people fleeing wars and natural disasters, and such migration must be accommodated”.

Thank you Mr. Professor. Thank you so much.

What and who exactly is helping the creation of these human tragedies?

Let’s not go there, given that according to our professor, we in the WEST all have the same culture like the BLAIR’S and BUSH’s  we may also be found guilty.

Did we say “sweet” a second ago? Well, bitter-sweet it should read.

“But there are also powerful incentives motivating people to migrate from poor to developed countries in order to better their lives: high unemployment, low wages, poor housing, education and health services are endemic in developing migrant-sending countries, making living conditions in developed migrant-receiving countries appear almost heavenly to people in the poorest countries”

That’s human history Mr. Professor. As the world's 8 richest - with whom we all of course have the SAME CULTURE and ‘WAY OF LIFE’ - have as much wealth as the bottom half, in other words, 3.6 billion people, what do you think THEY should do? Not follow the jobs, or money, and die misery and poverty?

I wonder what our professor would say about international financial markets where overnight billions can be transferred from one tax region to another TAX HEAVEN.  No culture shock there, no borders between the WEST and PANAMA I guess…

Our professor writes about Europe but his concern also includes the US and Australia. What exactly is the culture of Australia, the one of First Australians – as John Pilger refers to them in his wonderful documentary, Utopia or the invading western colonial powers (not people, powers) that systematically oppressed and brought to extinction the lives of Australian people?

In the article, Africa gets numerous mentions. While telling us about ‘wealth seeking migrants’ did the professors hear of the Scramble of Africa? What was that about? The most wonderful European wealth, how did that come about? Oh, it must be a cultural aspect of the European continent to be rich, nothing to do with the eras of colonialism, slavery and modern day exploitation of African and Middle-Eastern resources. Indeed, if you believe it, surely the African way of life was not changed by European masters (not by people but powerful masters) who divided the continent between them for so many centuries.

In the 80’s there were Hollywood horror movies about invasion of deadly killer bees. Somehow they all seemed to be coming from Africa invading the peaceful neighbourhoods of US suburbs.

Is Mr. Professor referring to the US culture during or post slavery? Which American culture is at risk, the culture of Native American’s or the culture of the African Americans? Who or what exactly is the cause here?

As Mr Trump is about the take to the office, of course there is the danger of climate change that threatens the entire world population, but hey, we the lefty lunatics concerned about the climate are being warned by the professor: “ONE WOULD IMAGINE THIS PROSPECT WOULD RIVAL CLIMATE CHANGE AS A TOPIC FOR HEATED PUBLIC DEBATE BUT, AMAZINGLY, ALMOST NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IT”

Well, Mr. Professor, you are talking about it. Isn’t one xenophobic, reactionary, historically wrong, purposefully selective, elitist and biologically racist voice not enough?

A voice that hides behind his job title, a voice that is given generous space in a daily broadsheet…

A voice that offers no answers to the problems millions of ordinary people are facing everywhere.

You see, it’s the black babies, the babies of the migrants that we must fight. Not those who create poverty, inequality, homelessness, unemployment, hospital queues, crowded classrooms and what not.

I wonder, in our professor’s view do the Travellers in Ireland also pose a risk to OUR BRILLIAN CULTURE in Ireland?

What do you think?
